IF you’re a Robert Mitchum fan, it’s almost impossible not to give Verbalize ROAD five stars. Heck, he even wrote and sang the title song.
Mitchum plays Lucas Doolin, a Korean War vet turned Kentucky moonshine runner, a man with “a machine gunner’s outlook and death don’t faze him powerful.” Times are hard along Command Road, the revenuers from Alcohol and Tobacco are stepping up the pressure and a titanic city operator, Carl Kogan (Jacques Aubuchon), is trying to win out all the local moonshiners. Luke Doolin is the best runner out there, and when the revenuers & Kogan push, he pushes relieve.

The revenuers, personified by Troy Barrett (Gene Barry), want to shut down things and especially want encourage in capturing the mammoth fish Kogan. At one point he even (mistakenly) tries to intimate Luke into cooperating. “I reckon you can do all you say,” the sleepy-eyed Luke says after listening to Barrett’s threats. “But first you got to accumulate me. If you can.” Kogan’s threat is more disclose and lethal. He wants to purchase out and perform his empire. In other words, the moonshiners belong to a loose cooperative and Kogan is threatening a hostile takeover. Barrett tries to derive through persuasion; Kogan’s goons utilize guns.
Mumble ROAD loves cars and driving. When we aren’t underneath the souped-up ‘51 Ford’s hood admiring the curves of its engine, we’re speeding and chasing and crashing along the rural backroads. The meander scenes were probably attractive engaging for the time, although today they fair gape quaint and hokey.
Mitchum is, as always, advantageous. In an titillating bit of casting, and perhaps as a nod to the dubious paternity in some areas of rural America, Mitchum’s son James is cast as his brother Robin Doolin. The less said about his acting the better, but they do observe an abominable lot alike. Another involving and somewhat wooden choice is the golden-throated Keely Smith as Mitchum’s titanic city’s girlfriend Francie Wymore. As a bonus to her fans, she sings a couple of songs.
Instruct ROAD is a minor cult classic, most favorite in the Appalachia place. I read an keen bit of trivia from the IMDB site: Elvis Presley was originally offered the fragment of Robin Doolin, but Tom Parker set the kabosh on it. Now THAT would have been racy.

Seeing this film for the first time today, it must be almost impossible to imagine the impact it had (especially in the South) forty plus years ago; it’s one of the first i know of that actually showed some belief of what made those folks up there in the hills tick. I grew up in the Piedmont position of South Carolina and i was ten when this came out — watching it today takes me correct aid to that time and that world.
I know for a fact that this film was so common that it was detached playing regularly as a summer drive-in movie in the Carolinas ten and more years after its release.
The fable is a bit simplistic, the dialog ranges from adequate to banal, some of the performances impartial about adequately camouflage up otherwise blank places on the camouflage, there are continuity slipups (a scene place in Memphis is shot moral in front of a store that says “Asheville’s Finest”, as i occupy) … but none of that stuff MATTERS.

It doesn’t matter because the performance that counts — Mitchum’s (and to a lesser extent, Gene Barry as the Fed) is Proper On The Money. It’s a classic Mitchum performance — Great Bob at his sleepy-eyed, existentialist-loner best… the man who doesn’t really give a damn about remarkable of anything till someone *makes* him care. Which is about equivalent to walking up to a sleeping pride of lions and kicking one in the teeth.
The final, 3-way high-tail that leads to the inevitable tragic/mythic ending is a bit obscene by the slick standards of today’s action films, but, (especially for anyone who has driven the relieve roads and hills where they shot it and where it is plot) it’ll smooth derive your adrenaline pumping. (Stare for the cigarette…)
((Of course, any review of “Content Road” must inevitably mention Mitchum’s hit recording of the theme song from the film — which i have to warn you is, unfortunately, *not* the version that was frail on the print i remember, but which is worth looking for in and of itself.) )
A colossal film, unbiased on its gain terms, but there’s a bit more:
This, from what i have read, was the film that Mitchum ramrodded thru to build his career and indicate he was collected “bankable” — that people would tranquil go to his films — after a brush with the law that would barely even be reported today, but was looked upon in the Hollywood of the mid-Fifties as a career-killer.
Imagine what we would have missed between then and now if “Bid Road” had flopped.

Do yourself a favor and skip buying this state. I was able to obtain/bootleg all of the episodes on DVD, which I felt I had no choice in doing (I’d rather hold a factory spot), recorded from Canadian TV (which, by the draw, even has more footage in some of the episodes than the syndicated U.S. broadcasts) . This plot it’s intact, the diagram it was intended, with the fresh soundtrack—not the pusillanimous generic elevator music that the studio snappy replaced it with in the DVDs. It’s objective not the same display without the novel soundtrack.
A faux-suede satchel or counterfeit parka case doesn’t advance halt to making up for compromising the artistic integrity of Northern Exposure. Sorry Universal, but you aren’t getting one red cent from me until you regain this proper.
I would appreciate to select this. It would be my most prized DVD plot. But I cannot until they indicate us the episodes in their complete and current forms. What a murky destroy. They could have sold 100X this many and had loyal post release sales had they not gutted this improbable reveal. Shadowy.

I waited a long time to look this special on the National Geographic Channel, and I wasn’t disappointed. Don’t let the nearly three hours apprehension you because this is very well worth it.

This is by far the best documentary I have seen…EVER. They did a fantastic job at looking at land, sea, and air creatures, giving all of them equal time. They clarify Darwin’s visit very well, and the video is pristine. You truly own you are there when you gape this.
As I said earlier, don’t let the three hours anxiety you. It may seems to plug on in some places. Maintain me though, it is worth every puny of it. It’s shaded to know that humans are destroying places like that. If anything, this documentary will indicate the world that these creatures are actually WORTH keeping around.
This DVD will transport you to the wonders of the Galapagos. The documentary provides viewers with in depth commentary and footage that will certainly bring the destination closer to you. Image quality and footage are superbly filmed, and Tilda Swinton’s soothing suppose & pitch space the just tone for an wonderful destination.

Wildlife footage has been captured in an incredible way; not only from a visually keen point of concept, but also from a detailed point of understanding. Loved the scenes where giant tortoises are featured, marine iguanas feeding, blue-footed boobies displaying, albatrosses courting, and the only-tropical penguin on Earth fishing underwater. The volcanic eruption footage is also considerable for its quality. For viewing purposes, the larger the conceal the better.
We went to the Galapagos in May 2006 for nine days and it was an astounding experience. We dilapidated Adventure Associates in the US, and also Ecuador’s Metropolitan Touring. This dvd will remind us constantly of the great message the islands left upon us. We asked for “what is the best time to go”, and we understand that tourism is managed year-round. We were advised that in the summer months, Easter, Xmas and Modern Year’s, finding situation can be appealing, but in months like April, May and early June, finding place is easier, and that wildlife is at its prime due to the transition months between one season and the other one. They were SO lawful! We saw so many astonishing things both on land and underwater (weather was unbelievably perfect too!) . We noticed larger vessels offered greater amenities, onboard options, and their level of Naturalists’ environmental interpretation is suitable. We are making arrangements to go befriend again with friends in early June 2007, and will give them this dvd as a gift.
Back to the dvd, the sound quality is perfect and the rude stamp of $14.99 is very affordable. This is thus far the best comprehensive documentary we have seen about the Galapagos, and it will not be a disappointment. I have purchased other documentaries, and although they were superior, this one remains our common. Another hard-to-find dvd is NG’s “Galapagos, Land of Dragons”, but was never released in dvd format, unbiased vhs. You know what happens with vhs tapes after playing them twenty times. The dvd case has easy access to the dvd itself, and the different menus are easy to navigate through. The only con is that it brings impartial the audio program in English. It’d have been spacious to add Spanish and German.
All science teachers and libraries should have it. You will not be disappointed with this dvd. Hope you can visit this astonishing destination.

Cool Runnings is a perfect family film. People of all ages will be drawn to it and luxuriate in cheering for the Jamaican Bobsled team. I always wanted to stare “Wintry Runnings” since I first saw the previews on tv. I finally got to observe it after a few years while I was in Texas with my family and it was even better than I conception it was gonna be. Since John Candy is in it, I idea it was gonna be unbiased another gigantic comedy. But I was unfavorable, parts of it are amusing, but it’s more of a colossal drama movie.
Three Jamaicans who are dying to secure to the ‘88 Olympics bustle track and are on their draw to the Olympics for determined until all three of them slither. They settle to open a unusual trend in Jamaican history by trying to become the first Jamaican bobsled team to catch to the Olympics. But on their map, they gain out that all the runnings aren’t frigid. The other teams such as East Germany laugh at them because they don’t have a top notch bobsled and because they don’t believe they belong in the Olympics. John Candy is a 2-time Gold winner of the Olympic bobsled team of about twenty years ago and he must coach the crew of four Olympic hopefuls in order for them to have a chance to qualify for the ‘88 Olympics.

Paul Leni’s WAXWORKS has taken its beget sweet time in coming before the public in presentable accomplish. This of course is not the film’s fault. Now that it is here as fraction of a quartet of restored German Alarm Classics, there is cause for noteworthy rejoicing. As is often the case with most anthology films the parts are greater than the whole. There are three episodes provocative figures in a wax museum which are linked by the framing record of a writer writing about them. Are they scary? No, but at least one of them (IVAN THE Abominable with Conrad Veidt) is genuinely disturbing while another (SPRING HEELED JACK with Werner Krauss) boasts the most expressionistic sets since CABINET OF DR CALIGARI (also in this location of four fresh releases from Kino International) .

The longest sequence features Emil Jannings in an Arabian Nights setting which is more comical in tone and surprisingly erotic thanks to Olga Belajeff who plays the romantic lead in all three stories. The male lead is William Dieterle who plays the writer. He would give up acting and become a major director in Hollywood during the 30’s and 40’s. This is the first time this film has ever looked this pleasant. It was restored from two differnt prints and has been properly tinted. The accompanying piano gather is effective especially in the IVAN sequence.
WAXWORKS is not a stout film but it is an significant one. It is one of the first scare anthology films and boasts spectacular station designs for the three stories. While it won’t terror you, it will entertain you and that is ultimately what it is all about. As mentioned earlier this is fraction of a quartet of peaceful German panic films newly restored and released on DVD. It can be purchased seperately but if you devour these type of films then spring for the whole package. In addition to NOSFERATU and CABINET OF DR CALIGARI, there is a striking current restoration of THE GOLEM.
In the wake of World War I, German film was sharply influenced by expressionism, an arts movement which is less concerned with imitating reality than in using form to believe psychology and emotion. THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI brought the style to the veil in 1919, and throughout the 1920s many directors would perform projects under its influence.

German director Paul Leni (1885-1929) was one such–and although he is best recalled for his later Hollywood films, most notably the stylish THE CAT AND THE CANARY, the 1924 German WAXWORKS shows him very approach the peak of gifts. It is also very clearly an homage of sorts to THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI; not only would Leni cast two of that film’s actors in major roles, he drew from the film’s style for both sets and cinematography.
WAXWORKS is an “anthology” film, a collection of stories go together by a running thread. A young writer (William Dieterle) is employed by a carnival sideshow wax museum to write stories about several of their figures: a Baghdad Caliph, Ivan the Unpleasant, and Spring Heeled Jack. As he writes, the film segues into the anecdote the writer invents.
The longest of the three stories concerns Harun al Raschid, a Caliph of Baghdad who falls in cherish with a baker’s wife–and then seeks to purchase her for his believe. Featuring the notorious Emil Jannings as the Caliph, the episode is a mixture of light comedy and Arabian Nights fantasy, particularly celebrated for the greatly stylized sets that pick the earlier CALIGARI and THE GOLEM to somewhat softer achieve. It also offers the very rare opportunity to notice Jannings, eminent for his dramatic roles, in comical mode, and he proves equally adept with this bit of fluff as with his more “serious” work.

As in the earlier episode, the sets are also improbable, although perhaps not so obviously so.
Fine though the first two sequences are, it is really the last that is most notorious, and justly so. Here Leni sets the fable against the carnival itself and presents it in grotesque, dreamlike images that very deliberately prefer CALIGARI; moreover, he casts actor Werner Krauss, who played Caligari himself, as a menacing killer who slowly stalks his stunned victims. The killer is referred to as both Spring Heeled Jack and Jack the Ripper; clearly, however, he is more akin to the latter. The cinematography in this sequence is particularly magnificent, using multiple exposures in a blueprint that foreshadows Leni’s stylish THE CAT AND THE CANARY.
In an overall sense, WAXWORKS is quite aesthetic, and were it not for the fact the final sequence is so short I would easily give it a fleshy five stars. The Kino DVD also offers a very agreeable transfer, complete with current tinting; unfortunately, however, it offers no bonus material except a Leni short–an unexpected but mildly bewitching “filmed crossword puzzle.” Although some may accumulate the anthology nature of the film a bit off-putting, calm fans will likely cherish WAXWORKS from open to execute.

LEGEND never really found an audience in theatres despite Ridley Scott and Universal’s constant tinkering with the final cleave. Seems many movies of this era were victims of audience test screenings, and the desire to give people a commercial product that went down easy — sight BRAZIL for a prime example of how studios consider (the “care for conquers all” version) . So Account was severely edited and rescored with a like a flash (but often effective salvage by TANGERINE DREAM) . It was short on location and long on art direction, but sumptuous visuals and an all-out acting job by Tim Curry and make-up artist Rick Bottin made the movie an easy approved of many fantasy fans. The movie looks gorgeous, and the tale is a universal fall into archetypes. Nothing unpleasant with that, it certainly worked for STAR WARS!
This DVD collection gives you two versions of Memoir — the unusual director’s chop with over twenty minutes of added footage and the new Goldsmith score; and in addition, you regain the current US release. In essence you collect two different movies! The moods vary, the characters seem a itsy-bitsy different, with whole novel speeches and images to luxuriate in. If you are a fan of the movie or Ridley Scott it’s a MUST-HAVE! This is what DVD dreams are made of. While many bemoan the fact BLADE RUNNER does not reach with its 2 versions — the fact is other than the narration and the contented ending, there is not Powerful different. But here we have a case where you can peep what happens to a movie as it goes through development HELL. Gripping stuff, and it comes LOADED with extras.
The only downside is the director’s cleave gets the royal treatment of a 5.1 sound mix while the other version gets a 2 channel Dolby mix, and even the video quality seems different with again the director’s slash looking better than the theatrical release. But at last we can peruse a widescreen version of either cleave, and we score a lot of extras that clarify some of why the movie is the diagram it ended up. Gorgeous images, two suited soundtracks (I like both though the mood changes), and basically strong performances. Anecdote is a waking dream!
As long as unicorns accelerate the earth infamous can never damage the pure of heart, and that is why the prince of Darkness has sent his most foulest goblins out into the very daylight he seeks to end forever to prick off the horns of the last two remaining. But when Jack (the forest boy, played by a very young Tom Skim) takes Lily (a royal princess, played by the gorgeous Mia Sara) to witness them, she does the forbidden and touches these mature creatures. Lily soon discovers it was she who unintentionally lured the unicorns into the goblin’s trap; enabling them to shoot the poison stinger into one of the “beasts”, as they call them, with a definite opinion. She vows to perform things true again as the land becomes shrouded in a blanket of snow and tries to protect the last unicorn standing but is too musty to defend even herself. She then is captured, along with the unicorn, and taken assist to the vast tree where the immoral advance to sacrifice. There the prince of Darkness yearns for a companion and tries to develop Lily one of them by tempting her with jewels and power while Jack and his unusual friends Gump, a jealous sprite and some other nymphs, contrivance a concept to put Lily, the unicorn, and the world before it’s covered in eternal shadow.

Legend wasn’t too well received in theaters and was not a common among most critics but it has expeditiously become a cult classic with fantasy lovers like me. Considering the extreme budget director Ridley Scott was given in order to design this film in the mid-80s, I belief they did a astonishing job in bringing William Hjortsberg’s murky fairytale to life, which was written specifically for the cloak. I also felt the entire cast effect on grand performances - especially Tim Curry who went through hell (pun intended) to search for as devilish as he does here…
Within this two-disc site is two versions of the film. One is the director’s slit, as it was intended to be seen, and the other is the U.S. theatrical version, which I personally consume, as do many others apparently. There are many extended scenes in the director’s crop that were taken out of the U.S. release to shapely down the overall running time but I felt the U.S. version simply flowed better. It also features a more dramatic salvage by Jerry Goldsmith instead of the more emotional acquire by Tangerine Dream and doesn’t include the closing credits song “Is Your Treasure Strong Enough? ” by Brian Ferry, ending the movie on a more magical imprint. But mild, it was nice to inspect both versions and to compare the two. There’s also a lot of bonus materials in the small edition of Fable that many fans will be very grateful for.

Dragon Ball Z is the one greatest anime series ever created. With its action-packed universe and compelling storylines, Akira Toriyama’s magnum opus has never failed to please. This is the latest season position FUNimation has released of the series.
This site picks up where the last one left off. The Z-Fighters have attempted to do battle with the Androids, but fetch themselves outnumbered. As if things aren’t already abominable enough, Goku is bedridden with a heart virus. The Z-Fighters location different ways to swear as the threat grows. And honest when it looks like things couldn’t catch considerable worse, a recent villain is thrown into the fray. His name is Cell, and he is still of cells from various Z-Fighters and villains. He begins enthralling human beings to become more distinguished, and seeks to contain the Androids, so he can glean further power and ascend to a stronger gain. The Z-Fighters now face their greatest challenge.
The DVD plot is divided amongst six discs, and contains the Immoral Cell, Second Execute Cell, and Perfect Cell sagas (the Cell Games Saga is NOT included, it takes up the entire next station.) The represent has been subjected to digital noise reduction, and the status includes a booklet of character profiles and episode listings.
Obviously, if you’re recent to the Dragon Ball franchise, you’ll want to inaugurate with the Season One box region, but if you’re already a fan, you’ll appreciate these episodes. The previous plot contained some pleasurable fight scenes, and you come by plenty more of them here, including Android 17 vs. Piccolo, Android 16 vs. Immoral Cell, and Trunks and Vegeta vs. Second Produce Cell. This location scores major points for being one of the most “filler-free” sets yet. Throughout this space, filler is kept to a minimum - unbiased about everything that happens is notable to the narrative.
One of my personal accepted features of the place is the Marathon feature. FUNimation includes a feature in these sets that allows you to plan all of the episodes on each disc from originate to kill with no interruptions from intros/outros/recaps/etc. This is an extremely handy feature I wish more TV shows on DVD had.
Like earlier Dragon Ball Z season sets, the characterize has been cropped at the top and bottom (this was done due to excessive grain and hurt to the modern source), and it has been subjected to the digital noise reduction process. Obviously a lot of fans, myself included, were disappointed to inspect the portray glean cropped. While the digital noise reduction doesn’t do as thorough a job cleaning up the image as you’d hope, it IS the best these episodes have ever looked. In other words, it’s a “give and capture” scenario. You lose some of the characterize you could gawk on earlier full-frame DVDs (and there ARE a few gaping moments that will really accomplish you demand FUNimation’s decision), but on the profitable side, you earn some report on the sides, and the image quality is favorable to all earlier DVD releases.
Sound quality is similar to the earlier sets. English audio quality is incredible, but the dub is unexcited translated poorly and the verbalize cast is hit and miss. On the other hand, the Japanese audio quality is dreadful, showing its age, but it does feature a well-translated subtitle track from Steven J. Simmons that lets you experience the series as originally intended. Is Dragon Ball Z EVER going to gain its Japanese audio remastered?
Additionally, like the earlier sets, you have the option of watching the English squawk cast played against the current Japanese audio.
Disappointingly, the next episode previews aren’t included. But they weren’t in any earlier season state, so it’s no stout surprise.
No special features are included here unless you count the trailers and the same textless opening/closing sequence all other sets like this have had. On the fine side, the state does include a booklet similar to the earlier sets, with character profiles and an episode guide, making it handy to go factual where you need to go on the DVDs.
It’s another ample Dragon Ball Z season position, enough said. Easily some of the best material in the entire series. If you’re a fan of the series and don’t already have these episodes, you can bag them all here for one obscene effect. Cropping issues aside, this is a astronomical site, and a edifying value, especially compared to the older DVD releases.
Highly recommended to any fan of Dragon Ball Z.

I bought this movie because I’ve been eager in the mystery of the Tremendous Duchess Anastasia since I was a kid, not because I have rugrats. This movie was intriguing. Anya is a spunky heroine; Dimitri is a scrappy hero; they have a sweet and surprisingly adult romance and the station is more realistic (except for the ridiculous villain Rasputin) than expected. There is a magnificent, unfortunate song called “Once Upon a December” that the amnesiac Anya sings in the empty palace as ghosts arrive out of paintings to dance with her. This movie isn’t historically fair, but it’s a satisfying fairy memoir — the plan we wish it had been.

This version of the opera of Hansel and Gretel is accessible to children of all ages because it is visually bewitching. Keen puppets, called the Kinemins by the producer befriend in 1954, are believable even though they lack the sophistication of the movement seen in Toy Yarn. The settings, shining, sometime monstrous, and always imaginative, are perfectly matched to the symphonic glean of the opera and to the fanciful nature of the epic. Of course, the witch is the centerpiece of the tale, and Anna Russell’s incomparable interpretation of the witch both unnerves and entertains at the same time. She is obviously having fun–as is the witch herself until her untimely demise in the oven. I saw this film in a theatre when I was only five years conventional, fell in worship with the regain as a result, and have loved classical music ever since–thanks to Hansel and Gretel. I unruffled cherise this film and recommend it to anyone with children. Actually, this film is delectable entertainment for people of all ages.
Don’t remove it. I have extraordinary memories of seeing this film at the movies when I was a child. I loved it so great that I even had the picture album. I couldn’t wait to collect it on DVD to part with my children. What a disapointment! It looks like the same print they showed in the theaters serve in the early 1970s. The colors are washed out and used. Even worse, the image looks soft. I knew this was an ancient film and I wasn’t expecting a “Snow White” quality restoration, but this was so poor that my family and I couldn’t even attain watching it.

The unsuitable quality becomes even more apparent when you observe the “Making Of” promo included on the disc. Filmed in Dark & White encourage in 1953, it looks crisper and sharper than the film itself.
I knew I was in distress, though, when I opened the DVD case and there wasn’t a chapter list inside. I sensed that if Understanding Video (the distributor) didn’t care enough about their product to include a chapter list, they wouldn’t care about getting the best possible print (let alone striking a recent one) . And I was apt.
Again, despite whatever fond memories you might have of this film, place your money. Don’t retract it.

I vividly remember the release of Sleeping Beauty. I was stale enough to go glance it myself - unprejudiced barely. Cartoons never looked the same to me, and I spent the rest of my life inhaling fantasy and science fiction on a quest for the same thrill.
Animation has changed quite a bit in the ensuing years, but even today Sleeping Beauty is a towering achievement. Now I’m more sensitive to the tricks of the art and can inspect the masterful consume of perspective that made the scenes leap out at you. Disney took a mountainous risk when creating this film, pouring a immense amount of resources in making it something as perfect as was possible for his time. While the studio reaped the financial benefits, the audience was the valid winner, as a whole genre exploded before our eyes. Even now, with anime quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, this film stands out for narrative, art, and music.
The additional features, especially those that retell the making of the film, are favorable as well. All captures in glorious detail on this DVD. This is a must observe for anyone who level-headed loves a fairy chronicle.
This movie is one of the enormous classics of animation, especially for Disney. The DVD version is significantly improved compared to the previous VHS tape. I planned to listen to portions of the commentary in preparation for my review, and instead found myself listening to the entire thing because it was so incredibly exciting. Mary Costa (Princess Aurora) and others provide their perspective on the creation of the movie, as well as personal memories of Walt Disney and his influence on the film. The audio commentary by itself is worth replacing your VHS tape, particularly for aficionados of Disney movies.
In addition to the audio commentary are numerous, emphasize numerous, other bonus features. Some I felt were less than worthwhile, others, such as the shorts “Tall Canyon” and “The Peter Tchaikovsky Memoir,” were trustworthy bonuses.
